September Golf Classic 2018 - Crews Hill Golf Club, Enfield
Whilst elsewhere the USA and Europe were bitterly contesting the Ryder Cup the atmosphere at Crews Hill Golf Club in Enfield was far more friendly and relaxed.
On Friday 28th September sixty eight players took to the fairways and greens on a fine day for the annual charity golf day.
When the decision was taken to adopt a one golf day per year strategy back in 2015 there was a niggling worry that it would affect our fundraising capacity. But we needn’t have been concerned. The newly conceived ‘September Golf Classic’ attracted 41 players in its first year and raised £1,200 for charity (this was a record for a POETS’ golf day).

Year on year the attendees and fundraising have increased - £1,500 in 2016 and £1,650 in 2017.
This year we chose to donate all of the proceeds to the Margaret Centre at Whipps Cross Hospital where Brian Hurcombe was cared for prior his sad passing in December 2017. We also introduced a new team trophy in his name and asked guest of honour Jean Hurcombe to present it.
The team trophy was collected by Dan Ambrose from Bespoke Brick 2 who finished equal with Drilltec on 89 points, but won on a count back.
It turned out to be a busy day for Dan as he also carried off the Ken Elner Memorial Guest Trophy. He finished on 40 points, just one ahead of 3 players in a tightly contested competition. One of those competitors was Steve Barnett of London Lintels who won the Peter Swain Memorial Members Trophy.
Dan Ambrose also snapped up one of the nearest the pin awards. Other prizes were picked up by Errol Seryck, Dan Tester and Luke jessop.
We were grateful to the sponsors Sika, Drilltec, Blucher and Match-It who provided prizes for the nearest the pin and longest drive challenges as well as welcome refreshments.
The bonus was that once again we broke the record for money raised, with a total of £2,061 going to the Margaret Centre at Whipps Cross Hospital.
It was fantastic day all round kicked off with a full English breakfast, followed an 18 hole Stableford Competition and concluded with a hearty meal of ham, egg and chips with rhubarb crumble and custard dessert. Anybody intersted in joining us next year should keep an eye on the website for details.
